  • Fat Tuesday and the peace of God

Fat Tuesday and the peace of God "Mardi Gras" is French for "Fat Tuesday."  The latter is the most popular search term on Google this morning.  Its name comes from the practice of feasting before the fasting of Lent begins.  Before the days of refrigeration, people would[…]

How well do you know Jesus?

Bible open to John 3 with a crown of thorns resting on it (Credit: Steve Collender)Paul told the church in Philippi that nothing was more important to him than knowing Christ (Philippians 3).  God told Jeremiah that he would give people a "heart to know him" so that He could be their God and they could be his people (Jeremiah 24:6-8).  I led a retreat this past weekend and rediscovered 1 John 2:3, "We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands."  Is it really possible to know the God of the Universe?  The simple answer is "yes."  And the reason I'm writing this blog is because I understand Paul's words more clearly now, than I ever have before.  Knowing God has been the most important relationship in my life these past weeks.

No jelly beans for Janet

Jelly Belly jelly beans (Credit: Brandon Dilbeck via en.wikipedia.org)It only took WalMart one night to put all of the candy hearts in a half-price basket and transform the aisle marked "seasonal" into an abundant array of jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and marshmallow eggs.  I love the Easter season.  Easter represents the end of winter and the beginning of Spring.  The season is a celebration of the fact that Jesus has provided salvation to everyone who will receive it.  But I think this year will be my favorite Easter ever, because of the days that will lead up to it.  I have never participated in Lent, a time of reflection and a time to give up something in order to focus on Jesus' sacrifice at the cross. This year I won't be spending any money on that seasonal aisle in WalMart because I'm giving up sweets for Lent.  I want to use the Lenten season to focus on Jesus and to pray for my family.  We have some serious days ahead - but Sunday's coming.

Valentine advice you will want to share

Valentine pink and white candy hearts (Credit: Natalia Guseva via Fotolia.com)My kitchen counter and my desk at work each have a stack of cards I call my Valentines.  They are not Valentines in the traditional sense, because they don't have red hearts or romantic, candy wishes.  Most of them say, "Praying for you and your family or thinking of you during this difficult time."  A Valentine is a card given to express love to another person.  Each of those cards is an expression of love to our family, making this Valentine's Day one of our most special.  We are blessed to have friends and family who have been conduits of God's love to all of us during Ryan's diagnosis and surgery.  James 2:8 says, "If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, 'Love your neighbor as yourself,' you are doing right."  You have loved my son and prayed for him as you would for your own, and there is no greater gift you could give this Mom on Valentines Day.  So I am writing a Valentine post today.  This is for the women who subscribe - so they can forward it to their husbands/sweethearts if necessary.
